They are running the race; He is writing their stories.
The 2019-2020 School Year was nothing that we could have imagined when we began our year last September. We regularly seek the Lord for His direction and guidance, and we know that He orders our steps as a school; sometimes, those steps lead to unexpected places for each of us. Unexpected is very much the word to describe 2020. No matter what our circumstances are, each day at OCA, we experience the truth of these verses:
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. -Ephesians 3:20-21
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. -Romans 8:28
First of all, He has provided for us exceedingly and abundantly. When we moved forward in pursuit of the building in Otego, we had no idea that in just a few short months, COVID-19 would arrive and radically transform the educational landscape in the United States. But, He did. We had no idea that in order to have school open in the Fall of 2020, we would need significantly more square footage in our building in order to distance students. But, He did. We are now in a unique position among the schools in our area; we have a surplus of space...exceedingly, abundantly, above...the space we need.
He is working all things together for our good. The effects of the shutdown on the children and families in our area have been significant emotionally, financially, and academically. Our families need to get back to work. Our children need to come back to school. As we reviewed the New York State Guidance for reopening our school, we found ourselves in the unique position of being able to reopen fully in September - five days each week. As other schools have announced their reopening plans it has become clear that there will be a significant need in our area for child care as many schools will only be returning for two or three days of in-person instruction each week.
Our heart has always been to serve our community, which is why we have now created the OCA Self Directed Independent Learning Center. We will be offering a safe environment for area students to complete their virtual academic instruction while their parents are at work. He has blessed us beyond measure, and we are using what He has given us to bless others.
The Lord has sustained us this year, but it has not been a year without financial stress for our school. Our largest fundraisers are held each spring, and both had to be cancelled. As we plan for the fall, it is already apparent that our fall fundraisers will also not be feasible, unless the guidelines for gathering drastically change. These losses are significant and represent over $30,000 we rely on annually. In the midst of this struggle, we are also outfitting a new building and expanding our use of the building beyond our initial plans, in order to open the Self Directed Independent Learning Center. As you celebrate all of the good God is doing at OCA with us, we would ask that you also consider supporting us financially during this time.
We ask that you prayerfully consider coming alongside us during this time of growth and expansion. We ask also, that you hold our school up in prayer daily. We want nothing more than to remain open for in-person school all year. Please pray for the continued health of our students and staff. Thank you for your support and prayers; they mean the world to us.
